Our ideas so far

The agenda of our blog is: the role of Indigenous Peoples in post-colonial (post-independence) state-building. State-building is different from nation-building:

  • State-building is geographical (e.g. infrastructures and borders) and political (e.g. institutions).
  • Nation-building is more about ‘national identity’ (e.g. Maya, Zapotec).
  • Polanco uses terms like “modern state” and “nation-state”

“And through the creation of a virile and growing mestizo class, the influence of the Indians upon their countries has been greater than the influence of the white man’s civilization upon them.” – Harold Osborne (Indians of the Andes: Aymaras and Quechuas, 1952)
